Healthy Fast Food Franchises
Why a Healthy Fast Food Franchise?

By , About.com Guide

The trend toward eating healthier has emerged over time due to the fact that an alarming number of Americans have become overweight and increasingly at risk for disease. At the same time the pace at which we live has not slowed down, leaving less time to prepare healthy meals on a regular basis.

Thus the need for healthier fast food franchises has arisen. While many existing fast food franchises have added healthier choices to their menus, there still is a sizeable niche for the healthier franchises.

Food and Drug Administration Recommendations

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prepared a report highlighting some specific recommendations on ways that food establishments can help decrease obesity. Their suggestions included:
  • Marketing - Marketing for lower calorie foods should outweigh the promotion of higher calorie, less healthy foods.
  • Education - Develop strong educational programs that emphasize the importance of consuming fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy, whole grains, and less saturated fat.
  • Availability and Information - Increase the availability of these healthier foods and provide nutritional information in a simple and standard format.

Types of Healthy Fast Food Franchises

It is understandable that Americans are looking for healthy food that not only tastes good but also offers a variety of choices. Establishments that provide the consumer with the ability to participate in their food preparation by offering them the option to select from various menu items have become very popular.

There are several salad franchises in which customers can create their own salads choosing from a wide range of ingredients. Some of these venues also include healthy sandwich choices, soups, and smoothies as well. In these types of eateries, consumers typically find that the food is fresh and also free of preservatives and artificial ingredients, thereby increasing the health benefits.

It is also possible to find franchises that offer items that cater to special diets. For example, they may offer restricted diet selections for those allergic to gluten or consumers who are on a low carbohydrate diet, as well as various types of vegetarian foods.

One commonality that appears to exist between most of these establishments is that the originators were tired of only finding unhealthy choices when they were in a hurry; therefore they made the decision to participate in initiating a change. Another common thread between these types of franchises includes a healthier menu along with nutritional information and customer participation. Further, the establishments offer a wide variety of choices that also taste great.

It appears as if the world of fast food is changing from the way it had been known for many years before. This new niche is becoming increasingly more popular as consumers express the need for these establishments, and it appears to be a continuously growing market.
