There are a variety of reasons that may lead to a transition from a traditional job to the operation of a franchise. Perhaps you are ready to be your own boss, or maybe your company is downsizing and your position is being eliminated. Once you decide that you would like to open a franchise, how can you go about making a smooth transition?
Preparation
Hopefully you will have some time available in which to overlap your job with the opening of the franchise. Since you should not expect to earn a paycheck immediately, you will want to plan ahead so you are not left in a bad position financially. If you do not have a working spouse who can cover household expenses for a while, it is important to save a portion of your salary for a length of time before you initiate your franchise operation. It is a good idea to accumulate six to nine months worth of financial protection. This can be done at the same time that you are researching various franchise opportunities.
The Transition
Once you find your franchise match and are ready to begin operation, it is time to start the transition process. Here are some suggestions on how to make your transition from employee to franchise owner:- Part-time employment - A possible option is to find out if your employer would let you become a part-time employee. That way you are not losing all of your income at once. Also, you will have more time to devote to your new franchise.
- Job sharing - Another suggestion you can make to your employer is allowing you to share your position with another employee, known as job sharing. In order to sell this concept, you will probably have to do some research ahead of time in order to demonstrate to the employer how he or she would also benefit from this change.
- Work week nights and weekends - If the two options above don't work out, you can work the week nights and weekends while using the other times of the day to open your franchise.
- Week night and weekend franchise planning - If the three options above don't work out, you must manage opening your franchise while working full time. Set up a schedule for yourself. Plan on doing your research and paperwork on the week nights and schedule your appointments on the weekends.
