Interview with Jack Armstrong, President of FranNet - Page 2

By Don Daszkowski, About.com

Why should someone interested in buying a franchise use a Franchise Consultant?

Franchise consultants work hard to understand the client's dreams, goals and why they want a business, and have the experience to help the person discover the best fit for them. The consultant has pre-screened companies to help narrow down the search for the right business. It's in your best interest to use the free services of a consultant to help you through the research process every step of the way.

Here at FranNet, we have a proven method of success in researching and finding good franchises. We have the experience of knowing the local market, what works, and what territories are available. We have worked with local attorneys, accountants, which banks are more inclined to lend to start up franchises. We turn down many franchise companies who apply to us for marketing help. Over the years, we have developed a very powerful personal franchise assessment tool that no one else in the industry has, and it is very helpful in helping clients build the right business model.

Since the economy is worrisome right now, is now a good time to buy a business?

There are certain areas of the economy that are growing and doing very well. The number of small businesses being started is very strong, and there are many excellent business service franchises that cater to helping the small business owner succeed. The population of the country is aging, and there are many franchises that are starting to work with the aging population. The demographic trends are very strong in certain industries, and you need to do your research but there are some great opportunities out there right now. There are other industries that are more recession-resistant, such as hair care, automotive repair, and home improvement. A person needs to be careful, do the research and build the right business model. We see the same number of people going into business as before, but they are going into different types of business. More people are focusing on the service economy instead of food or retail.

What three things would you recommend to someone before they buy a franchise?

  1. Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page, and that you do the research together.
  2. Work with a professional franchise consultant who has been doing this for a number of years and can provide you with their experience in finding the right fit.
  3. Understand your reasons and desires for why you want a business. Make sure it is not because you don't like your job; if that is the case, just find another job. Business ownership is not for everyone, but for the right person it is a great way to earn a living, build a valuable asset and create a great lifestyle.
