Definition:

The Canadian banking institutions that are regulated by the Bank Act and who must meet strict regulatory requirements.

These are commonly referred to as the "Big Six" - the six institutions that dominate the industry: the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Bank of Nova Scotia (Scotiabank), Bank of Montreal (BMO), Royal Bank (RBC), National Bank of Canada, and TD Canada Trust.
