Buying a franchise can be both similar and different from buying a job.
Similarities
One way in which becoming a franchisee resembles employment is that with franchising there is a strict system that must be followed. The structure on just about everything is already set by the franchisor. Although a franchisee may believe that the opportunity will enable them to be their own boss, this is not completely true; the franchisor’s rules must be followed. However, if the system works and it is followed, you can be quite successful. As a franchisee, you are working more independently since there isn’t anyone to report to right on the premises. At the same time, the support and guidance available can be a positive attraction to potential franchisees. Rather than being completely on your own as in a new business startup, there already is a program set up to follow. Also, there are typically people at a higher level that can field questions and offer assistance with problems that arise.
Differences
Although working as an employee for a company may require long hours in some types of positions, a franchisee may experience even longer days. After all, the franchisee is the one responsible for all facets of running the business. You may operate the business ten hours per day and also spend additional time in the evenings doing paperwork. As the franchisee, you handle all the daily operations of the business as well as all the items that need to be taken care of behind the scenes. This includes hiring employees, processing payroll, ordering supplies, etc. You may hire some employees to manage some of these tasks. However, at the end of the day, you are the one that holds the responsibility of overseeing everything. It is important to make sure all aspects of the operation are accomplished appropriately so your business can be as successful as possible.
