Becoming a franchisee is a commitment that you will likely be making for the long run. Therefore you will want to be certain that you make the most logical choice that you possibly can. In order to do this, there are some questions that you should ask yourself while choosing the type of franchise that is best suited to you.

1. Summarize your credentials

If you haven’t already, compile your resume or curriculum vitae (CV). This will give you a more succinct picture of how you match up with a particular franchise.

2. Consider your past experience

Although it is not mandatory that you have been employed previously in a position within a particular industry that you are considering franchising with, it is beneficial to have that experience. Not only will you know what to expect, but obtaining financing for your franchise will probably be easier, since you will have a more convincing case as to what you can bring to the table in successfully operating that type of business.

3. Evaluate your strengths and weaknesses

Where do your strongest skills lie? Where do you need more development? Consider your organizational skills, management skills, computer skills, and energy level.

4. Where does your passion lie?

Do you have any particular hobbies or activities that you really enjoy doing? Since you will be spending a great deal of time running the business, it would be beneficial to choose something that you enjoy doing. For example, if you are into health or fitness, you may want to consider that type of franchise.

5. Examine your likes and dislikes

It is important to select a franchise that you will enjoy running. For example, you might believe a pet grooming business is needed in your town. However, if you do not enjoy caring for animals, you should not open this type of franchise.

6. What type of working atmosphere do you prefer?

Do you prefer to manage others or would you rather work alone? Do you like staying indoors in an office setting or would you rather be out and about meeting with clients?

7. Where do you want to be in five or ten years?

Evaluate where you expect to be regarding your professional and personal life in the future. If you believe that you cannot see yourself staying in the location that you are at, it would be better to choose a mobile franchise or an internet-based franchise.
